Silver Investment Guide
Why silver is an attractive investment, how it differs from gold, and the best products to buy.
Why Invest in Silver?
Silver has served as money and a store of value for over 4,000 years. Today it occupies a unique position: both a precious metal and an essential industrial commodity used in electronics, solar panels, electric vehicles, and medical applications.
This dual demand — monetary and industrial — gives silver a growth potential that gold does not share to the same degree. As clean energy adoption accelerates globally, silver's role as a critical component in solar cells and EV batteries drives increasing industrial consumption.
Silver is also significantly more affordable than gold, making it accessible to first-time investors and those looking to accumulate physical metal in quantity.

The Gold-to-Silver Ratio
The gold-to-silver ratio tells you how many ounces of silver it takes to buy one ounce of gold. Historically, the ratio averaged around 15:1 (the approximate geological abundance ratio). In recent decades it has ranged between 50:1 and over 100:1.
Many precious metals investors use the ratio as a timing indicator. When the ratio is high (e.g., 80–100:1), silver appears undervalued relative to gold — suggesting it may be a good time to accumulate silver. When the ratio contracts, silver tends to outperform gold on a percentage basis.

Unlike gold, silver bullion is subject to VAT at 20% in the UK. This means you pay VAT when you buy. When you sell, you do not reclaim VAT — so the 20% acts like an additional spread you need to overcome to profit.
For this reason, silver is often considered a longer-term investment where price appreciation more than offsets the VAT cost. Many experienced investors hold silver alongside gold — using gold for capital preservation and silver for higher potential returns.
